Here are five things you may not have known you can do when visiting Donner Lake.
Take a Run at Donner Lake Loop
During the warm summer season Donner Lake opens up like it has never before. The melted snow gives way to beautiful lake water that is both cool and refreshing to jump into. Everyone knows about the many ways to enjoy time out on the water at Donner Lake. However, there are a few other ways to see the stunning views when not on the water. During your visit take a pass on Donner Lake Loop that encompasses the lake’s shoreline. This loop is the perfect path that is easy to follow making it ideal for hiking, cycling, and running. Simply enjoy a pass on the loop and you will find a great workout that is complete with stunning views. You will find that Donner Lake Loop combines Donner Pass Road and South Shore Road so you get some varied scenery into your experience. Getting to Donner Lake Loop is extremely easy from our vacation properties here by the lake.
Hanging Out by East End
Whenever you spend time out on Donner Lake, you are sure to run into many visitors who are also looking to enjoy their summer season. Visiting in the summer is a great time to be social with others and share this remarkable space. However, there are moments when we want to find a more private space, whether to celebrate a birthday or have the kids be able to play without being in anyone’s way. Donner Lake features a few different spots that are more secluded and offer a private experience. East End is a great spot that locals recommend where you can escape more of the summer pollen from the trees and find a secluded area. The usual lake rules are still intact here where you can enjoy swimming out in the water or have a picnic on the shore. The public dock at East End lets you take off into the water on a kayak or canoe and have a home base while you’re here.
Hike Up Donner Pass
If you are in the mood for a combination of driving and history, simply drive on up to Donner Pass. This is a highly rated scenic drive that is located just outside of Donner Lake, high up in the Sierra Mountains. The drive itself is great when visiting the area, as you can see Donner Lake high up from the mountains; there is even a Donner Lake viewpoint that offers the best view of the area. Donner Pass encompasses several miles and is a great way to quickly see some of the most stunning scenery possible. For those looking to add a little more adventure, you can make stops along the way. You will be able to hike around the area and go through old railway tunnels. The pass is historic as it was once the route old wagons used to navigate the area. Add a little history and fun with a drive down Donner Pass.
Hike the Cold Stream Trail
A stay in Donner Lake will also provide you with some great hiking opportunities that you do not want to miss out on. Cold Stream Trail is found nearby as part of the Donner Memorial State Park. The park is easy enough to find and is a popular destination for many visitors each year. However, Cold Stream Trail may be less familiar to you. This is an ideal trail for families as it is an easy 3.6-mile out-and-back trail. What makes the trail so special is that it was used by travelers back in 1846 hiking to the area. The trail is family and dog-friendly.
Challenging Trails to Donner Summit
For those who want a more rigorous trail, you can always make your way to Donner Summit. From here you can enjoy trails that follow the Pacific Crest Trail to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. Most individuals park at the summit before finding the trail they wish to navigate from there. These trails are for experienced hikers looking for a challenge.
